Recommended. Bigger than the average supermini - and a whole lot more sensible, too.
Styling
Familiar styling produces plenty of double-takes - its hard to distinguish from the previous generation car.
Handling
Basic versions are stodgy and unexciting on twisty roads - but the RenaultSport 197 is brilliant.
Comfort
One of the best superminis to spend time in thanks to good seats and a compliant ride.
Quality
Far better screwed together than the previous generation car, although some parts of the cabin still feel a bit lowest bidder.
Performance
Basic petrol engines lack urge, but the 1.6 litre version is a peach - and the RenaultSport 197 is a storming hot hatch. Punchy diesel motors the best way to minimise running costs.
Roominess
One of the biggest of the current crop of superminis, and with far more useable space than some rivals.
Costs
Good fuel economy, competitive insurance and long service intervals mean that cheaper Clios are very easy on the wallet. RenaultSport 197 is thirsty and pricey to insure, but still looks like good value next to mega-hatch rivals.
Value
Excellent standard equipment means that even a basic Clio is a good place to spend time - although youll have to pay extra for air conditioning in the most basic models.
Stereo
Standard CD stereo offers good sound quality, with a variety of upgrades available. Colour screen satnav works well, too.
Added Extras
Air-Bag, Alarm, Alloy Wheels, Anti-Lock Brakes, Central Locking, Electric Mirrors, Electric Windows, Immobiliser, Passenger Air-bag, Power Steering
